Tuesday at ABNL
Bath Community School's Technology Director, Mr. Doug Murphy, was our expert speaker for Tuesday. Not only does he keep our District on the cutting edge of technology and education, but he knows a lot about glaciers! Students learned today about how glaciers are formed, what they're made of, where they were in North America, and how they s-l-o-w-l-y traveled from the Hudson Bay area in Canada and created our Great Lakes. Science words learned today included moraines and eskers. Be sure to ask your child about these words. In the afternoon, we made flubber to help bring understanding to the idea that glaciers flow and move slowly as more and more snow is piled on top of existing snow. As you might expect, the flubber was a huge hit. There were many requests for the recipe which is below.
1 1/2 cups warm water
2 cups elmer white glue
food coloring
1 1/3 cups warm water
3 teaspoons borax
Directions:
1. In one container mix 1 1/2 cups warm water, white glue and a few drops of food coloring.
2. In a second container mix 1 1/3 cups of warm water and Borax.
3. Mix the Borax mixture into the glue mixture until combined. (may be some liquid in bottom of container).
4. Place Fubber on a tray and let stand for a few minutes before playing with it!
5. Store in air tight container.
After returning to school, we ventured out to the Hoop House to check on our lettuce crop. The seeds have germinated, sprouted and can be considered seedlings! Soon, we'll be able to "thin" the crop and get some hearty lettuce leaves growing for a salad. Keep watching for the progress. Here's hoping for some drier weather tomorrow!
