Final Friday

It was our last day at Harris Nature Center and our ABNL week. . . and the sun came out! What a welcome change! We were able to see many more wildflowers and enjoy the chirping birds. They seemed to enjoy the change of weather, too.

A focus of ABNL is a stewardship project on the last day of the week. Our stewardship project was to pull Dames Rocket and garlic mustard. Students learned that these two plant species are invasive and were probably brought here by Europeans. They grow quickly and choke out the native plants--wildflowers that we want to see in the woodlands. Each Dames Rocket plant can produce 8,000 seeds! We did our part today to make sure that Harris Nature Center would not be taken over by this invasive species. The students had a great week and learned lots of ways to take care of an ecosystem and our natural world. Many, many thanks to parent and grandparent helpers this week--Mr. and Mrs. Cook, Ms. Dunlap, Mr. and Mrs. Jubb, Mrs. Keck, Grandma Koch, Mrs. Knitter, Mr. Larner, Mrs. McCrackin, Mrs. Payne, Mr. Troub, Mrs. Wargo, and Mr. and Mrs. Wyskowski.
