Week of February 2-6

Happy Groundhog's Day! Will we have 6 more weeks of winter?

In reading this week, we will read a selection called The Jones Family Express.   (Unit 3, Week 4)  We will practice the strategy of inferring.  Authors do not always tell everything about the characters and events in a story.  Often readers must make inferences, or use story clues, illustrations, and their own experiences to determine what was left out.   Students will learn about future-tense verbs in grammar and words with the /ȕ/ sound in spelling.    In writing, students are researching and taking notes for their research project.  They are learning how to "Tarzan Talk" and write down the most important ideas.   In math, we are finishing Chapter 5 which is continuing learning strategies for multiplication.  Here’s where knowing the multiplication facts really comes in handy.  The Chapter 5 test will be Tuesday.  In science, we are finishing Chapter 7 Rocks, Minerals, and Soil.  The chapter test will also be Tuesday.

The "Enjoy the City"fundraising orders and money are due back February 17.  Please realize that the book is not FREE.  You are responsible for the payment or safe return of the coupon book.  Thanks for helping to support Bath Elementary School.

The Mileage Club sign up forms came home on Friday.  Please sign up your child by going on-line. It takes about 10 minutes and is the easiest way to get registered.  The class that has all students registered first gets a Fresh Fruit Party with Mr. Saylor!

Bath Elementary will be hosting a Science Fair on March 20.  There will be a Parent Info and Workshop on Thursday, February 5 from 4-5 PM.  The Science Fair Committee will so a brief presentation and will be able to answer questions, help with ideas for projects, and help begin research.  The Science Fair is required for students in Grades 4 and 5.  I strongly encourage 3rd grade participation.  It is fun and students learn so much.  Our class will also do a class project on force and motion.

Third Grade Post Office
The annual 3rd Grade Post Office will be open in just a few short weeks (Feb. 5-12). More details on times will follow, but here are some things to keep in mind:
  • Room 210 will need volunteers for the morning and afternoon of February 9 and 10 to help monitor and assist the sellers.
  • We welcome any donations of pretzels, fruit snacks, goldfish, and animal crackers to sell in our snack sacks.  Your donation will allow us to have a greater profit to donate to our fundraiser for Annie's BIG Nature lesson and the Voyageur Encampment. Please identify those things that are peanut free on the food label.
