Week of November 17-21

We'll get back into our normal routine this week with lessons in reading, math, spelling, grammar, writing, science and social studies! This week students will read an informational text called What's in Store for the Future? (Unit 2, Week 3) The strategy will be summarizing and students will work hard to summarize in 10 words or less.  The skill we will practice this week is identifying fact and opinion.  Facts are statements that can be proved to be true.  Opinions show what a person or group believes, thinks, or feels about something or someone.

In spelling, students will have words with th, ph, wh, and sh.  These words have two consonants that combine to make one sound, known as consonant digraphs.  Words will come home on Monday and the test will be Friday.  As always, words can be practiced at spellingcity.com. In grammar, students will learn about irregular plural nouns, such as  foot (singular) and feet (plural).  Some nouns have special plural forms.  They do not add -s or es.

We will begin Chapter 3 in GOMath "Understand Multiplication".  This chapter is an introduction to the concept of multiplication and students recognizing equal groups.  Students will learn several strategies to help them find the product.  Nothing beats memorization, though, for quick math fluency.  Getting a set of flash cards and reviewing them a couple of times a week can be helpful.
