Week of January 20-24

Third grade students are coming together to raise items for our themed basket Family Movie Night!  The auction will take place during the night of the Dodgeball Tournament (January 29).  We are asking families to think of the theme and donate item(s) that will go towards this great event!  Movies, candy, popcorn, popcorn seasoning, popcorn containers, NCG gift card, gift card for pizza…anything to make a family cozy and entertained during these cold winter months!  It would be great to have all items turned in by the end of next week (January 31)!  Thanks for your help in funding field trips and other special activities!

In keeping with Third Grade Common Core State Standards for literature and listening, we will be going to MSU’s Wharton Center to see Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a Fly, a musical presented by the Omaha Theatre Company.
Students will learn it’s not easy being a bug, especially on the first day of school! But luckily for Worrying Worm, Fearless Fly, and Sassy Spider, every creature finds its special talent in Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a Fly. Spider waits anxiously to shed his skin; Worm feels self-conscious and embarrassed for having no legs; and Fly’s 327 brothers and sisters drive her so crazy that she can hardly focus on schoolwork.  Based on the bestselling books, this hysterical musical coming-of-age will have students cheering on the quirky crawlers as they face problems and milestones common to us all.
The performance is scheduled for Monday, February 10, 2014.  We will be leaving school at 11:50 AM and returning around 2:00 PM.  Please send in $8.00 to cover cost of the ticket and transportation costs.  Thank you.

In reading this week, we will read a selection called The Jones Family Express.   (Unit 3, Week 4)  We will practice the strategy of inferring.  Authors do not always tell everything about the characters and events in a story.  Often readers must make inferences, or use story clues, illustrations, and their own experiences to determine what was left out.   Students will learn about future-tense verbs in grammar and words with the /ȕ/ sound in spelling.    In writing, students are writing opinion pieces and supporting their point of view with reasons.   In math, we are beginning Chapter 5 which is continuing learning strategies for multiplication.  Here’s where knowing the multiplication facts really comes in handy.  In science, we will begin learning about animal adaptations.
