We will continue to look at Literary Elements this week
during the reading block with the story, Dear
Juno (Unit 1, Week 2). We will focus
on character traits and use the text to help us determine the qualities of
characters. Students will look at what
the character says, what they do, and what they think. For example, some characters are determined,
smart, lonely, or angry. We will use
pictures and words to infer what the author is trying to tell us. Students will use a graphic organizer to help
them visually organize the story’s elements.
The spelling words this week follow the CVCe (consonant,
vowel, consonant, silent e) spelling pattern (Dear Juno, Unit 1, Week 2).
Students should practice the words they have not mastered. The pre-test, given each Monday, helps your
child know which words need a little more practice to be ready for the Friday
spelling test. Thank you for helping by
providing practice time at home.
In writing, we will begin to look at strategies writers use
to generate personal narratives. For
grammar, we will learn about two more types of sentences—command and
exclamatory! In Social Studies, we will use Scholastic News to learn about informational text features, summarizing, and test-taking strategies.
Picture Day is Tuesday,
September 18. Please send in the
form/envelope sent home last week either on Monday or Tuesday. Friday,
September 28 is our trip to Wharton Center to see Bunnicula. If you have not done so, please send in $8.00 and the
permission slip to cover the cost of tickets and transportation.
