Week of January 23
This week’s reading selection is titled The Jones Family Express. The comprehension strategy is inferring. Inferring is the process of creating meaning from the text. It combines our prior knowledge with what we read. When readers infer, they create meaning that is not explicitly state in the text. I like to tell students that they “read between the lines” to pick up on clues provided by the author to create meaning. When readers infer, they draw conclusions, make predictions, make connections, and think critically about the text. Look for grammar and spelling activities from The Jones Family Express to do at home on the “Links” tab on the Bath Elementary page and from Spellingcity.com.
In science, we are doing a unit on plants (Chapter 1) from the Scott Foresman science textbook. To help enhance our learning of plant parts and plant functions, we are growing basil in the classroom. Soon the seeds will germinate, we’ll have seedlings, and before you know it, we’ll enjoy a tasty treat of pesto basil. Can’t wait!
The February Scholastic Book Order was sent home last week. If you are interested in placing an order, you can do it online using the classroom code or send in the order with a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs. Thanks for you order.
We will have a math test over multiplication on Wednesday, January 25. Students will bring home a review/practice sheet on Tuesday night. Topics covered are the Distributive Property of Multiplication and factors to 9.
Friday is the last day of the second marking period--the end of the first semester! Wednesday is an Early Release day. School will dismiss at 2:15 PM. Thursday and Friday are half days with school dismissing at 12:05 PM.
The PRIDE wall in the lobby is full. As a reward, Friday is Pajama Day! Students may wear pajamas and slippers to school on Friday. No sleeping in class, though! Have a great week and continue to check the blog for updates, photos, and news.
