Experimenting with "Lava"

On Thursday, students in Room 210 did an activity with two kinds of "lava" -- thick and thin.  The "lava" was a mixture of flour and water to represent thick lava that erupts from cone volcanoes. The thin lava (water) is the kind of lava that comes from shield volcanoes.  This lava is thin and runny and is able to spread out.  The thick lava is trapped inside the Earth.  As gas bubbles and pressure build the volcano will erupt. Since the lava is thick and pasty, it doesn't spread out as much and makes a cone shaped volcano.  Be sure to ask your child what new discoveries they made!
