This week students will read the selection, The Wolf, written by Becky Bloom. This fantasy story is entertaining and humorous.
Students will distinguish between
fantasy and reality by deciding if the settings or characters could exist in
real life, and whether the plot events could actually happen. In grammar, students will learn about
suffixes and learn four suffix rules which will help them determine how to make
nouns plural. Most of the time students
just add the letter -s. This week they will learn to form the plural
if a word ends in a consonant and y,
they change the y to i and –es. In spelling, students
will learn that a consonant digraph is two or more letters that stand for one
sound. The consonant digraphs ch and tch stand for the /ch/ sound. Words this week come from Unit 2/Week 2 and
have the /ch/ sound.
In math, we will finish Chapter 2 on Data and have the assessment on Wednesday. Students can practice math skills at Moby Math, Accelerated Math, and FrontRow. In writing, we are continuing to work on Personal Narratives and in Social Studies, we are learning about our government, laws, voting, elections, and the three branches of government. It's so fun to see students interested in the democratic process. I've seen mailers from candidates running for state offices and heard stories of some candidates knocking on doors. It will be fun to see the results of Tuesday's election.
ABNL (Annie's BIG Nature Lesson) will be November 10-14. Please send in the $15 programming fee this week. We will take a bus each day to Woldumar Nature Center. Students will learn from the Naturalist on site, as well as teacher-led lessons all week long. We go outside for much of the day, so please be sure that your child is dressed for the weather. Layering is a good idea and clothes that can get dirty or wet is also a good idea. Students will need a sack lunch each day. If you prefer, the school will pack a sack lunch of PBJ and apple slices. If you want to help, just let me know.
Report Cards will come home on Friday, November 7 in your child's mail. Yearbook orders are due on Monday and Original Works art fundraiser orders are due Thursday.
