Week of October 20-24

This week students will read a Zuni play called, "The Strongest One". We will work on the reading skill of summarizing. Third grade students often want to do a retelling of a story, listing every single detail. With summarizing, students must pick out the most important events in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. This week they will use the strategy of "Somebody/Wanted/But/So". Students will complete the strategy using a foldable graphic organizer. They will identify who wanted something, what they wanted, what conflict/problem arose, and the resolution/solution.

The spelling words this week follow the long e pattern. Activities can be found at Spelling City to help practice for the test.  Since there is no school this Friday, the test for these words will be the following Friday, October 31.  This week's story is Unit 2, Week 1 The Strongest One.

In science, we are wrapping up a unit on plants.  The test for Chapter 1 "Plants and How They Grow" will be Tuesday.  Students have many study guides to help them prepare for the test.  Be sure to ask them for the 4 Square Vocabulary Sort, the Summary Sheet, and the written answer questions.  Thank you for helping students study and prepare for the test.

Parent Teacher Conferences are this week on Wednesday night, Thursday afternoon and evening. There is no school on Friday, October 24.  The Book Fair is also this week and students will be able to shop for books on their Library day (Wednesday).  Students do not return books this week.  Mr. Slocum is still in need of parent volunteers.  If you are available and want to give him a hand, please let him know by phone or email. The Book Fair will also be open in the evening during conferences.  The October Make It, Take It will be held in Room 220.  This is a great place to pick up reading and math interventions to use with your child at home.  Wednesday hours are 5:30-6:00 and Thursday from 1:30-2:00 and 5:30-6:00.

Students have the chance to turn Mr. Strickler into a clown this week! The class that collects the most money will also get a pizza party! Collection dates are October 20-23.  This is a good time to check the couch cushions, the car, and any other place that spare change can be found!

As part of our unit on plants, students have been learning about honeybees as pollinators.  We had muffins this week that were sweetened with honey instead of sugar.  Some students asked me to put the recipe here. Happy baking!

Grandma's Apple and Honey Muffins
2 cups sifted flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup whole wheat or bran cereal flakes
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts (optional) (I did not use walnuts)
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup grated apple
2 eggs
2/3 cup honey
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil

Sift flour with baking powder, salt and spices. Add cereal, walnuts, raisins and apple.  Beat eggs well; add honey, milk and oil.  Add liquid picture all at once to flour mixture, stirring just to blend.  Grease muffin cups and fill 2/3 full.  Bake at 400 degrees for 18-20 minutes.  Makes 18 muffins.

See you at conferences!
