Week of September 15-19

We will continue to look at Literary Elements this week during the reading block with the story, Dear Juno (Unit 1, Week 2).  We will focus on character traits and use the text to help us determine the qualities of characters.  Students will look at what the character says, what they do, and what they think.  For example, some characters are determined, smart, lonely, or angry.  We will use pictures and words to infer what the author is trying to tell us.  Students will use a graphic organizer to help them visually organize the story’s elements.

The spelling words this week follow the CVCe (consonant, vowel, consonant, silent e) spelling pattern (Dear Juno, Unit 1, Week 2).  Students should practice the words they have not mastered.  The pre-test, given each Monday, helps your child know which words need a little more practice to be ready for the Friday spelling test.  Thank you for helping by providing practice time at home.

School Picture Day
School pictures will be taken on Tuesday, September 16. Please return the Lifetouch form with your student on Monday or Tuesday.

Homework
The first math homework assignment is due on Monday.  Students brought home the practice page for Lesson 1.1.  Students learned about the Identity Property of Addition (6 + 0 = 6) and the Commutative Property of Addition (4+5=9 and 5+4=9) .  Please provide time for students to finish their homework and provide help if they need it.  The homework is a review of concepts taught in class.  You can expect math homework on most evenings.
