Fall Lettuce Planting

With the end of the beginning-of-the-year testing and NWEA, third grade is turning their attention to the curriculum and new learning.  In science, we will begin with a unit on plant parts and functions.  I am tying this into a PBL (Project Based Learning) project of showing respect for the community, school, and ourselves.  Students brainstormed a list of actions that could show respect.  One item that surfaced was eating healthy foods.  Students did a close reading of a newspaper article yesterday and learned that more people on Earth weigh more than they did in 1980.  Tomorrow we will read another non-fiction text about nutrients and making healthy food choices.  On our list of healthy foods to eat was eating leafy vegetables.  Today, students planted lettuce in the school's Hoop House.  Hopefully, with the sunny days ahead those little seeds will germinate and sprout.  If all goes well, we should be able to harvest the lettuce and have a tasty salad by Halloween.  We will also begin growing lettuce in our classroom using an AeroGarden.  (more info about that soon!) Below are some photos captured today from the first fall planting! We plan to plant more in March and April after the long winter months!

Today, Third Graders had the privilege of listening to Mrs. Hixson and Mrs. Allison, members of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), as they told interesting facts about our country.  They presented students with a pencil, small American flag, a bookmark, and a copy of the Constitution. What an important reminder of the Constitution and how it is the law of the land!
