Week of October 21-25

This week students will read a Zuni play called, "The Strongest One". We will work on the reading skill of summarizing. Third grade students often want to do a retelling of a story, listing every single detail. With summarizing, students must pick out the most important events in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. This week they will use the strategy of "Somebody/Wanted/But/So". Students will complete the strategy on a 4 sided paper in the shape of a cube. They will identify who wanted something, what they wanted, what conflict/problem arose, and the resolution/solution.

The spelling words this week follow the long e pattern. Activities can be found at Spelling City to help practice for the test on Thursday (t
his week only). This week's story is Unit 2, Week 1 The Strongest One.

We will start a new chapter in Science on Tuesday. Chapter 9 is all about the Earth's important natural resources. Students will view the Prezi and write their vocabulary words using the 4 Square Sort model, a district wide graphic organizer for new vocabulary words. This is a great study tool that will help as we dig into the chapter.

With the completion of MEAP, we have started the third grade math curriculum, GOMath. Chapter 1 is all about addition and subtraction within 1,000. If your child has not memorized their basic addition facts, please work with them at home on this important skill. Math fluency is just as important as reading fluency. Knowing the basic addition facts, without counting on fingers, frees students up to do the important work of problem solving. A set of flash cards practiced a few days a week can really help with instant recall and confidence. Look for a homework sheet most nights that corresponds with the lesson for the day.
