Week of March 4-8

On Monday, March 4, visiting author, Diane Terry, will be at our school to talk to students about being an author and writing.  She will bring an exciting presentation of facts and fun that teaches how to be "bored no more!"  She has over thirty years of classroom experience and has written two books, The Happy Faced Spider and The Bubble Gum Fairy.  Order forms to purchase books were sent home a couple of weeks ago, but can still be purchased tomorrow for $15 each.

Other special events this week include a RIF distribution and the chance to wear pajamas to school on Thursday.  On Friday, spring pictures will be taken through LifeTouch.

In reading, we will read a nonfiction article called, Here's My Dollar.  (Unit 4, Week 4) We will use the strategy of Monitoring Comprehension and the reading skill of Identifying Author's Purpose. Good readers stop often to check that they understand what they are reading.  In class, we call it "Stop and Check for Understanding."  Readers should be able to answer the questions Who and What?  Who am I reading about and what did they do?  Or, who am I reading about and what happened? If meaning breaks down during reading, students know they can use different strategies to fix the problem.  While reading informational text, it often helps to slow down the reading rate and/or reread the text carefully. This strategy can help students regain comprehension.  Identifying the author's purpose (persuade, inform, or entertain) can help readers evaluate and understand what they read.  The spelling words this week are a little tricky---they're homophones.  Students not only need to spell the word correctly, but be able to choose the correct spelling for the context of the sentence.  SpellingCity.com has some great activities to practice the words for this week.  In grammar, students will learn about irregular past tense verbs.  These are the verbs where the typical -ed is not added to show past tense.  Examples are see, saw.  Students will also be reminded that if they use the word seen, they need to have the helper word have.  For example, I seen MSU play Michigan on Sunday is incorrect.  If they use the word seen it must have have.  I have seen MSU play Michigan.  The correct way to say that sentence is I saw MSU play Michigan on Sunday. (GO GREEN!)

Young Authors Day is May 15 and we are busy preparing our books for this special day.  On Friday, your child brought home an order form to purchase additional copies of their book.  Please know that you are under no obligation to purchase additional books.  Each student will write, illustrate, and publish one book for FREE! If you would like to order more copies for gift giving or as a keepsake, just fill out the form and return it with payment inside the envelope.  If you do not wish to order copies, please sign the form and return the form to school.  All forms need to have a parent signature.  Let me know if you have questions.

In math, we are continuing to work on dividing by 5, 10, 3, 6, etc.  Students have done a fantastic job using different strategies.  Please continue to practice the multiplication facts with them.  Knowing the multiplication facts really helps when dividing.

In science, we are learning about Sound! At this point, the test will be Tuesday, March 12.  That date is subject to change based on our daily progress and understanding of concepts.   Students will have many tools to use as study aids.  These study aids include a Summary Sheet of chapter concepts, a Notetaking Sheet, Vocabulary Foldable, and Essay Practice.  There are also a couple of videos on sound embedded in the blog that are good for review.

If you would like to meet for Spring Parent Teacher Conferences, please contact me.

Wow! What a busy week ahead!
