Welcome Back and Happy New Year!

I hope you all enjoyed your two week break and had time to relax and enjoy time as a family.  I certainly enjoyed my time off, but I am excited to get back to school and see friendly faces!

We will pick up where we left off on many topics.  In science, we will continue to learn about forces that change Earth's surface.  The four major forces are volcanoes, earthquakes, weathering and erosion. We are tentatively scheduled for the chapter test on Tuesday, January 15.  Students will have many study aids and of course, the vocabulary words are on earlier blog posts, as well as the index cards that the students made.

In math, we will begin Chapter 5 "Use Multiplication Facts".  This is a very short chapter, with the assessment scheduled for Thursday, January 17.  Students will continue to using multiplication facts to solve everyday word problems where multiplication is needed.

In reading, we will read One Riddle, One Answer (Unit 3, Week 2).  This is a fairy tale where students will analyze the story structure of plot and setting.  The spelling words this week have the r controlled vowel.  Students will learn that an r after a vowel or a vowel digraph changes the sound the vowel usually stands for.  Examples of words with the /ar/ sound are care, fair, and pear.  In grammar, students will learn about present tense verbs where the action happens right now!
