Soil Study

Today, students (geologists) examined composted horse manure!  The manure has decomposed, and over time plus the miracle of nature, has turned into nutrient rich soil.  Students used a hand lens and a Popsicle stick to dig around and uncover surprises.  As you can see, some students found grubs, organisms, and exoskeletons.  After looking at the real thing, students then made Edible Dirt!  Their dirt cups represented the three main layers of soil--bedrock, subsoil, and topsoil.  The parent layer (bedrock) was peanut M&Ms or pretzel M&Ms (depending on your scoop).  Subsoil, which is a little lighter in color than topsoil, was chocolate pudding.  On top of the subsoil was the topsoil--Oreo cookies and sprinkles. Finally, to top it off, a gummy worm was stuck into the soil.  Yum!
