Welcome Back and Happy 2012!

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the time off. We will begin 2012 with lessons on bullying and a school-wide focus on classroom and hallway behaviors. We will not use the Treasures Reading Program this week, but will have read-alouds and comprehension lessons from other mentor texts. Therefore, there will be no spelling test or Weekly Reading Assessment on Friday. We will resume the reading program beginning the week of January 9.

We will continue our study of multiplication by learning facts and strategies. Please help your child at home by practicing these facts every few days. Flash cards are a great tool for memorization of math facts. You can also give your child some facts to say verbally while you are driving in the car, waiting for an appointment, or taking a walk. The repetition will help with fluency and confidence. Remember that you can practice addition facts at http://xtramath.org.

In science, we will begin a unit on Earthquakes and Volcanoes. The vocabulary words will be available on this blog after each lesson. Students will also have a summary sheet from the chapter that makes a fantastic study guide for the test. At this point, the test will take place sometime during the week of January 9-13. Once we get started, I will have a better idea of progress and be able to provide a definite test date. Watch this blog for more info!
